Commuters' dream - Hudson Line Commuting and Parking

Taking the train on the Hudson Line offers one of the most scenic commuting options. For most of the time, the Metro-North connection is pretty reliable. If you are looking to stay within a commutable distance from the city, faster express trains that serve Northern Westchester and beyond offer considerable time savings.

When you are considering where to move throughout Northern Westchester, Putnam Valley or even Southern Dutchess County, there are several factors to consider in addition to the actual time spent on the train. Some towns offer plenty of parking availability while others have a month or sometimes year long waitlist. If you are looking into monthly commuting costs, consider the combined cost of the train ticket as well as parking, as the parking fees may vary depending on availability and the operator.

Here are few examples of train stations along the Hudson line. This information is based on the information available for Fall 2022.

parking Croton-Harmon station

Croton-Harmon

This is a really popular station on the Hudson Line as there are many express trains that have their first stop here after the city. The fastest express trains take you to Croton-Harmon station in a whopping 45 minutes from Grand Central Station – Hardly enough time to relax with your favorite book or take a little cat nap. But, when you arrive at the station that is when the stress and race out of the parking lot begins. Hundreds of cars are trying to exit the station at the same time using the two narrow lanes. I am surprised that there have not been more accidents. However, this station offers one of the fastest overall commuting times and most train options.

Cortlandt

A few more minutes spent on the train offer you a bit more of a relaxed parking lot experience as well as more seating options on the morning trains. The Cortlandt station was recently renovated with future commuting needs in mind. There are even reserved parking spots for Electric Vehicles, so bring your Tesla here. While there is only one platform, the parking is plentiful. Never had to fight over a spot. Traffic lights by the exits make it less chaotic traffic wise. There are an average of two trains an hour in rush hour and one train per hour at other times.

Peekskill

Peekskill station offers walkability to larger residential areas that many of the other Northern Westchester towns don’t have. And on your way home, you can easily enjoy a meal in one of the excellent rail side restaurants such as Taco Dive Bar or Peekskill Brewery. The station is located on the scenic Hudson River waterfront. However, there are not many parking spots near the station. Every year in the fall the city of Peekskill does a lottery for the parking spots. There is only one entry allowed for each household and Peekskill residents and non-residents are in separate categories.  Trains run about two times every hour in rush hours and once per hour at other times.

Garrison

A small but beautiful station just north of Peekskill. This train station blends the Victorian with an Italianate style and is set in a picturesque setting on Garrison landing by the Hudson River. The train depot was seen on the Hello Dolly movie in 1969. Garrison Landing is lined with a couple of charming shops, but you can still score a cup of coffee at the Dolly’s restaurant in the morning. It is one of the only train stations north of Peekskill that currently has parking availability. Trains stop about twice an hour in rush hours and once an hour at other times.

The station is located right in the middle of the village, so there are many options where to grab a morning coffee or breakfast before boarding the train. Trains are stopping twice an hour in rush hour and average once an hour at other times.

Beacon

One of the biggest train stations on the Hudson Line. Both Metro-North and Amtrak trains stop here. Located just a short walk from the shops and restaurants this station is easy to walk to. Even though the station has lots of parking, there is currently a lengthy waitlist. This situation probably reflects the latest housing boom in Beacon and its popularity. Trains stop three times per hour in Beacon and once or twice in off-peak hours.
