Farmer's Markets and Backyard Gardening
The end of summer is a great time to hit the local farmers’ markets. This time of the year you find some of the tastiest produce and juiciest peaches. One of my favorite markets is the one held on Saturday mornings in Peekskill.
While I am an avid backyard gardener with a beautiful flock of happy chickens and a vegetable garden, it is always a pleasure to browse the offerings of a local farmer’s market. I have to admit that my vegetable garden is still not producing the best. Our yard is just a bit too shady, and the weeds tend to take over in the busy work months in the summer. However, with a small harvest every year, my kids have turned into veggie lovers. So, now we need to stock up on vegetables and fruits at the local markets. Here are a few of my favorite ones.
Peekskill Farmers’ Market
Held every Saturday in harvest season on Banks street from 8 am to 2 pm. Great selection of locally harvested vegetables, fruits, breads, cheeses, and seafood. There are always a few vendors offering tasty pickles and yummy spreads.

Ossining Farmers’ market
Another great farmers’ market is in Ossining. Loved the great pickled cucumber selection they had last time I visited. Plenty of vendors offering local vegetables, cheeses, and breads. Active green market with plenty of special events for the whole family.

Muscoot Farm Farmer’s Market
This farmer’s market is definitely worth a trip on Sundays. And you can combine it with a trip to view farm animals at the Muscoot Farm. It gives you a feel of a real farm to table experience and is entertaining for the whole family. The selection of vendors tends to be a bit more curated with a larger prepared food selection than many other farmers’ markets offer.
